Palm oil constituted, on average, 96% of the imported vegetable oil. Currently Uganda requires 422,000MT annually of vegetable oil to meet demand in the country, with the current annual production at 80,000MT (from both oil palm and oilseeds.
The demand for vegetable oil is increasing with increasing population and incomes of communities.
Vegetable oil is mainly for cooking and for soap making.
This circumstance presents a great opportunity for import substitution by the country and thus the decision to scale up production.
I appeal to all stakeholders of Kyotera to support and own this project for its strategic value.
Issues of land compensation of project affected persons will be handled transparently by ministry of lands in accordance with the law. Agriculture Ministry will spearhead production - _Hon. Frank Tumwebaze, Minister of Agriculture
