US meteorologists predict mild winter in Europe

The researchers of the US national weather agency National Centers for Environmental Prediction predict a warm autumn and a mild winter for continental Europe, which they hope will help prevent power shortages.

If temperatures remain mild enough between December and February, Europeans will need far less energy, that also makes it less likely that electricity and gas will run out.

Data from MeteoSwiss and the German Weather Service also show that there will be a warm winter. Other institutes are more reserved, but still predict at least a slightly increased chance of above-average temperatures. Neither predicts a cold snap leading to particularly high energy consumption.

Nonetheless, it is noted that such long-term forecasts are still subject to greater uncertainty.
