Macron accuses US of 'double standards' in energy trade

French President Emmanuel Macron slammed US trade and energy policies for creating "a double standard" with Europe.

"The North American economy is opting for an attraction that I respect, but they are creating a double standard" with lower domestic energy prices when selling natural gas to Europe at record prices, Macron said at a press conference in Brussels.

"Also, they allow state aid to go up to 80% in some sectors, while it is prohibited here – you get a double standard," he added. "It all comes down to the sincerity of transatlantic trade."

On Friday, Macron called out US and Norway as energy producers who make "the real superprofits," adding that he had discussed the topic "in a friendly way" with his American and Norwegian counterparts.

Earlier, a poll by the French public opinion institute BVA showed that Macron's popularity is down to 36% (-7% compared with the previous month) – the lowest since February 2020.
