Prices for pasta, tea, chips and vegetable oil soar in UK

In the UK, the prices of some household staples in supermarkets have risen sharply. Pasta prices rose by 60% in the year to September 2022, tea prices went up by nearly 50% and vegetable oil prices soared by 65% in a year, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

Other everyday items such as chips, bread, biscuits and milk also recorded large increases.

Overall, supermarket prices for budget food rose by 17% year-to-date by September, while inflation hit a 40-year high.

Especially rising food prices have a bigger impact on those with the lowest incomes in the UK.

According to a separate ONS report about 85% of Britons asked are now worried about the rising cost of living, compared to 69% in a similar poll in January. Around 45% of adults paying their energy bills and 30% paying rent or mortgages say these were difficult to afford.
