Google to discontinue Chrome Lite Mode on Android

Lite Mode feature aka Data Saving Mode on Google Chrome which was aimed at saving users’ data will very soon be discontinued by Google on 29th March  2022

This feature that was introduced into Google Chrome for Android in 2014 under the name 'Chrome Data Saver' to reduce on the amount of data used by smartphones and also boost web page loading speed. This feature will soon be discontinued as mobile data costs has become become relatively cheap across the world. 

In a post on the Google Chrome Help site a Chrome Support Manager said that the lite mood will be "turned off" with the release of Chrome version ‘M100’ on the stable channels for Android on March 29th 2022.

Google explained why lite mode is ending,

“In recent years we’ve seen a decrease in cost for mobile data in many countries, and we’ve shipped many improvements to Chrome to further minimize data usage and improve web page loading. Although Lite mode is going away, we remain committed to ensuring Chrome can deliver a fast webpage loading experience on mobile.”

Users can access Lite mode as a feature to save data from Chrome’s Settings page under the “Advanced" section. When in Lite Mode, the pages that are heavy and slow to load are identified by Chrome and sent through the Google servers to compress them.
