Sudanese Police Allegedly Tear Gas Protestors ahead of Coup’s One-Year Anniversary

Officers allegedly threw smoke bombs and tear gas canisters at hundreds of dissenters demanding a return to civilian rule, three days before the one-year anniversary of General Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan’s military coup.

Footage shows protestors carrying banners, shouting slogans and setting car tyres on fire.

Since its independence in 1956, there have been five successful military coups in the country – last year’s saw the African Union suspend Sudan’s membership.
