UK to stop imports of Russian liquefied natural gas from January 1

The UK government will impose a ban on imports of Russian liquefied natural gas from January 1, 2023, the UK Foreign Office said in a statement.

"From 1 January 2023, the UK is ending all imports of Russian liquefied natural gas and supporting countries around the world in reducing their own dependency [on Russian gas]," according to a statement posted on Twitter.

Nearly half of the gas entering the UK market as of 2021 came from Britain's North Sea shelf. Norway is the country's largest gas exporter. Meanwhile, about 17% of imports are LNG supplies, the bulk of which come from Qatar, the US and Russia.
